I like politics when they are conducted to present the best candidate. However, polls simply judge who people support.
Yet, despite this, leading a poll is a big deal for some. Matt Jacobson sent out an e-mail which urged his supporters to vote on The Maine View gubernatorial poll located here:

As of my last check, despite leading his herd to the poll, he is still behind in the numbers by at least 100.
The e-mail is as follows:
The Maine View has a poll up for who you would choose in each primary of Maine’s gubernatorial election.

Please go and vote – and pass it around to your friends and family. We know Matt is the best candidate – let’s make sure that others know as well!
E-mail over. Matt Jacobson has lost any and all support he had from me. To place this in the context of the extreme times we live in, if he is fine with rigging a poll how much further is the steps to rig a vote?
If you disagree that this is an attempt to rig the results of a poll meant for people who visit The Maine View blog, please let me know what you think.

I created the poll, which is non-scientific, really to just give Tweeps and people who happen on my blog of Facebook. I'm surprised at all of the buzz it has generated. That Jacobson and Poliquin are contacting their supporters to ask them to vote is great. I think it really shows the power of Twitter and Netroots in general.
I don't think you can blame Jacobson for drumming up support. This is what he, and any competent candidate, will do when it comes time for fundraising and the real primaries.
This is more of a practice at campaigning rather than an attempt to rig results. Again the poll is far far from anything I'd label scientific. Keeping that in mind, I think we should just have fun with it while it's around.
I'm glad that Derek posted his comment. I got Matt's email, and frankly I wouldn't have known about the poll otherwise.
If his supporters did not know about the poll, then the poll would be skewed anyway!
Derek, thanks for being so honest. Any open internet poll cannot, by its nature, be scientific. You can't control the sample. It's completely dependent on who sees the poll and who responds.
Scientific polling involves carefully selecting a cross-section of a target population in order to sample a representative group.
If you support any of these candidates; help them out! Participating in a poll is a small way to show your support.
BTW: We've got great candidates to choose from this election. Having said that; if you're interested in practical solutions to Maine's problems rather than political promises, check out Matt Jacobson!
Best thoughts!
Jim
