Iran's Cowardice

The people of Iran, and of the world, are entitled to freedom. Freedom is the engine of progress for mankind. In shutting down foreign news sources and placing their employees under, essentially, house arrest you are proving yourselves to be cowards. For all sides in Iran the act of silencing the opposition and using violence against those with whom you disagree with are what makes you coward. By not facing your opposition intellectually and resorting to barbaric brute force you are a coward. Speak to your opponents instead of shooting and stabbing them. Rally around your voices instead of your weapons.

To the world I urge you not to allow Mirhossein Mousavi become the next Benazir Bhutto. Stand in unity of democracy and freedom in Iran and against the censorship of its people. In a world where injustice is commonplace those who stand for justice should not stand by to prevent being looked at as 'meddling." If meddling in another nation's affairs brings freedom and restores justice then it is indeed a good thing.

I wrote the following a few years ago in response to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto:

Mourn the loss of Benazir Bhutto, not her message. Her message is not yet lost. The reaction, if you are going to carry her message, should not be violent. It should not be vigilante. The reaction should be civil, organized, and in the promotion of peace and stability so the children of Pakistan can live in a safer world. That was her message. Your lives, whether good or bad, is always better with civil unity even if personal differences exist in faith and politics. If the last thing to unite you is that you are all human, then so be it. However violence, retaliation, and anger are not how your problems are going to be resolved. Through peace, working together, and recognizing common needs, you can pursue a future of your nation, of your people, unified and without hatred for each other, you can lead fulfillment to your lives. Take the message of those who die with causes for peace, and promote them through peace and unity.
