My response to buying out the Taliban:
Would you join a group blindly following your religious convictions and prepare to die for a cause only to be given money by those you believe to be the enemy in order to simply survive and neither rise from poverty or accomplish your religious mission?
If you would you have no idea what it is like to be part of a cult of suicide.
I oppose the plan because it is a distasteful betrayal of the values America stands for. We are not sold to the highest bidder. We work for what we earn. While the alternatives to such a method always seem easier in the long run they neither change the culture of poverty and only demoralize and disenfranchise those who at the end of the day still accept the lifestyle of a militant and will always hold that militancy within them. To believe we can forever control them through a one time "purchase" is nieve.
Not only will this program be abused by more than Taliban fighters, as nobody knows who is or is not a part of the Taliban on the lower ranks. Due to the poverty of Afghanistan people will enter as Taliban converts and never have turned to violence or radicalism ever in their lives. Among the ranks of the Taliban they are estimated at fewer than 20,000 total for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
We can win this fight through eliminating the Taliban and ensuring security to towns in Afghanistan. It will require as much military as infrastructure but a massive approach between the two is the only way to ensure a guaranteed alliance with the populace of Afghanistan. The effort needs to be enormous and jump start their society to recognize more than tribal lineage or faith as a source of security.
